Who really studies yoga: Indologists and masters of tradition
Yoga has a century of academic writing behind it. Sanskrit philology, history of religions, anthropology of India: researchers have spent decades on manuscripts, datings, lineages. Here is a working list — not exhaustive, but verifiable — for anyone who wants to read the source rather than the summary.
Indologists and academics
Philological and historical approach. These are the researchers who establish the facts: dating of texts, translation, context.
- Alexis Sanderson — world reference on tantra and Kashmir Shaivism.
- David Gordon White — specialist in bodily alchemy and tantra.
- James Mallinson — historian of Hatha Yoga and editor of Sanskrit texts.
- Mark Singleton — historian of modern yoga, on the formation of twentieth-century postural yoga.
- Elizabeth De Michelis — critical analysis of the reception of yoga in the West.
- Edwin Bryant — translator and commentator of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras.
- Mircea Eliade — historian of religions, reference author on yoga and immortality.
- Georg Feuerstein — scholar covering both the tradition and the philosophy of yoga.
- Tara Michaël — Indologist, CNRS researcher, translator of the Hatha-Yoga-Pradīpikā.
- Louis Renou — grammarian and reference Indologist in the French language.
- Heinrich Zimmer — Indian mythology and philosophy.
- Johannes Bronkhorst — ancient Indian philosophy and Buddhism.
- Axel Michaels — Hinduism and ritual, anthropological approach.
- Sheldon Pollock — Sanskrit philology and the intellectual history of India.
Masters of the tradition
Practical and philosophical approach, transmitted in an identifiable lineage — not a Western commercial synthesis.
- Swami Vivekananda — Vedānta, Rāja Yoga, rationalist reading.
- Swami Kuvalayananda — pioneer of scientific research on the effects of yoga.
- Swami Satyananda Saraswati — tantric tradition, founder of the Bihar School of Yoga.
- Sri Aurobindo — philosophy of Integral Yoga.
Two starting points for reading
Historical research and traditional teaching offer different perspectives. For introductions and commentary alongside the texts, these two books by Tara Michaël are described in her official bibliography.
- Introduction aux voies de yoga: Desclée de Brouwer, 2016, an introduction to different paths of yoga, in French.
- Hatha-Yoga-Pradipikâ: introduction, translation and commentary by Tara Michaël; revised and expanded edition, Fayard, 2022, for reading a traditional treatise in French.
A name is worth nothing on its own. What matters is what the person read, translated and dated, and the lineage in which they place their work. This list is a starting point for checking a claim before repeating it.
